Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime journey across Morocco’s northern and central regions, where history, culture, and stunning landscapes await. Our 8 Days Northern Tour to Imperial Cities and Desert from Tangier offers a perfect balance of ancient cities, breathtaking deserts, and unique Moroccan experiences that will stay with you forever.
Your Moroccan adventure begins in the bustling port city of Tangier, often referred to as the gateway between Europe and Africa. Situated on the northern coast of Morocco, Tangier has been an important strategic location for centuries. Upon arrival, you will be transferred to your hotel for a restful night before starting the tour.
After breakfast, we begin with a guided tour of Tangier. Highlights include the Kasbah Museum, which showcases artifacts from prehistoric times through to the 19th century, and a stroll through the bustling Medina. Next, we’ll journey to the famous blue city of Chefchaouen, nestled in the Rif Mountains. Known for its vibrant blue-painted buildings, Chefchaouen offers an enchanting atmosphere and plenty of picturesque photo opportunities. You’ll have free time to explore its winding alleyways, local markets, and charming cafés before retiring for the night.
Leaving Chefchaouen, we travel toward the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, we’ll discover well-preserved mosaics, columns, and ancient streets, which provide a glimpse into Morocco’s Roman past. Next, we head to Meknes, one of Morocco’s imperial cities. Meknes is renowned for its impressive blend of Islamic and European styles of architecture. Key highlights include Bab Mansour, the grand gateway to the city, and El Hedim Square, which mirrors the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa in Marrakech. After exploring Meknes, we’ll check into our hotel for the evening.
On the fourth day, we journey to the culturally rich city of Fez, the heart of Morocco’s spiritual and intellectual life. Upon arrival, we’ll take a deep dive into Fez’s rich history with a tour of the Fez el-Bali Medina, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Medina is the world’s largest car-free urban area, allowing for an immersive experience as you stroll through its narrow, winding streets. We will visit the famous Al-Qarawiyyin University, the oldest continuously operating university in the world, and Bou Inania Madrasa, a stunning example of Moroccan architecture. The evening will be spent at your leisure.
A full day dedicated to exploring Fez allows you to uncover more hidden treasures within the city. Begin with a visit to the Chouara Tannery, where the traditional art of leather tanning is still practiced today. You can watch workers dye leather in large vats from a viewing terrace. Next, we’ll explore the Royal Palace and its golden gates, the Jewish Quarter, and the Medersa el-Attarine, known for its detailed tile work. Fez offers a maze of experiences, from its bustling souks to tranquil gardens. As the day draws to a close, enjoy dinner at a traditional Moroccan restaurant.
After breakfast, we depart Fez and travel south towards the Merzouga Desert, passing through the scenic town of Midelt, nestled in the high plains between the Middle Atlas and High Atlas Mountains. The route offers stunning views of forests, valleys, and small Berber villages. Upon arrival in Merzouga, you’ll experience the Sahara Desert in its full glory. The evening’s adventure begins with a camel trek into the towering Erg Chebbi dunes, where you’ll witness a magical sunset before settling into a traditional desert camp for the night. Enjoy a hearty Moroccan dinner under the stars and immerse yourself in the rhythms of Berber music.
Waking up to a spectacular sunrise over the desert dunes is an unforgettable experience. After breakfast, we head towards Ouarzazate, known as the “Hollywood of Morocco” due to its film studios and proximity to popular filming locations. En route, we pass through the Todgha Gorges, dramatic limestone canyons that are a paradise for hikers and climbers. You’ll have time to explore these stunning gorges before continuing to Ouarzazate. Upon arrival, we’ll visit the Kasbah Taourirt, a grand mud-brick fortress that provides a glimpse into traditional Moroccan architecture. Overnight stay in Ouarzazate.
Our final day of the tour takes us to the vibrant city of Marrakech. On the way, we stop at the UNESCO-listed Ait Benhaddou, a fortified village that’s been featured in countless films and television series, including Gladiator and Game of Thrones. Ait Benhaddou is one of the most well-preserved ksars in Morocco, with its towering mud-brick structures and narrow streets transporting you back in time. After exploring, we cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, offering breathtaking views before arriving in Marrakech. Your tour concludes upon arrival in the city, where you are free to continue your adventure or prepare for your journey home.
