Embarking on a 2-day tour from Fes to the dunes of Merzouga offers an unforgettable experience, combining the rich cultural heritage of Morocco with the majestic beauty of the Sahara Desert. This adventure takes you through the Atlas Mountains, traditional Berber villages, and the vast golden dunes of the Merzouga desert. Whether you’re seeking a spiritual journey or a thrilling desert adventure, this tour delivers it all.
The tour begins in the early morning, departing from the historical city of Fes. Known as the cultural heart of Morocco, Fes is a city brimming with centuries-old traditions, vibrant souks, and stunning architecture. As we leave Fes, you’ll notice the landscape gradually shifting from the bustling cityscape to the tranquility of the Middle Atlas Mountains.
Our first stop is Ifrane, a charming town often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco” due to its European-inspired architecture and pristine surroundings. Nestled in the Middle Atlas, Ifrane offers a refreshing change of pace with its cool climate and lush green parks. Take some time to explore its cedar forests and enjoy the crisp mountain air.
As we continue, we pass through Azrou, famous for its ancient cedar forests and resident Barbary apes. The towering cedar trees provide a mystical atmosphere, and you’ll have the opportunity to interact with these playful primates in their natural habitat. It’s a perfect spot for photos and a brief respite before continuing our journey.
The road to Merzouga takes us through Midelt, a small town known as the “apple capital” of Morocco due to its extensive orchards. Here, we stop for lunch, enjoying a traditional Moroccan meal in a local restaurant. Midelt’s strategic location between the Middle and High Atlas mountains offers breathtaking views and a chance to stretch your legs before heading into more arid terrain.
After lunch, the scenery dramatically changes as we descend from the mountains into the Ziz Valley. The Ziz River carves through the landscape, creating a lush oasis in the midst of the arid desert. Lined with towering date palms and ancient kasbahs, the valley is a striking contrast to the barren lands ahead. As we drive through, you’ll marvel at the natural beauty and traditional Berber settlements that dot the landscape.
By late afternoon, we arrive in Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara Desert. This small desert town is located at the edge of the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes, some of the highest sand dunes in Morocco, rising over 150 meters. Here, you’ll experience a magical sunset as the golden sands transform into fiery hues of orange and red.
One of the highlights of this tour is the camel trek into the heart of the Sahara. As the sun begins to set, you’ll embark on a peaceful camel ride, following ancient caravan routes into the desert. The rhythmic sway of the camels and the vastness of the dunes around you create a surreal and tranquil experience. The trek leads to a Berber desert camp, where you’ll spend the night under the stars in traditional nomadic tents.
Upon arrival at the camp, you’ll be greeted with warm Berber hospitality and a traditional Moroccan dinner. The evening is spent around the campfire, listening to Berber music and stories from the nomads, while the starry sky above the desert provides a breathtaking backdrop.
The second day begins early, as we wake up before dawn to witness the spectacular sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes. The play of light and shadow on the towering sand dunes is a mesmerizing sight, and it’s a perfect moment to reflect on the serenity of the Sahara. After sunrise, you’ll have time to explore the dunes on foot, taking in the quiet beauty of the desert.
After sunrise, enjoy a traditional Berber breakfast at the camp before mounting your camels for the return trek to Merzouga. The early morning light casts a golden glow on the desert, making the journey back just as enchanting as the previous day’s ride.
On the way back to Fes, we stop at Rissani, a historic town that was once the starting point of the great caravan routes that crossed the Sahara to Timbuktu. Rissani is known for its bustling souk (market), where you can browse traditional Moroccan crafts, spices, and textiles. The town is steeped in history, with ancient ruins and centuries-old kasbahs, making it a fascinating stop on our journey.
Leaving Rissani, we make our way back through the High Atlas Mountains, passing through the town of Errachidia. The road offers stunning panoramic views of the rugged mountains and valleys below. As we ascend, the desert gradually gives way to the lush greenery of the Middle Atlas, marking the transition from arid plains to fertile highlands.
We stop once again in Midelt for a relaxing lunch before continuing the final leg of our journey back to Fes. The return drive offers a chance to reflect on the diverse landscapes and experiences encountered over the past two days, from the vibrant city of Fes to the tranquility of the Sahara Desert.
The 2-day tour from Fes to Merzouga offers an incredible opportunity to explore the natural beauty and cultural richness of Morocco. From the majestic Atlas Mountains to the serene dunes of the Sahara, this journey is a feast for the senses. Whether you’re seeking adventure or relaxation, this tour promises an unforgettable experience that will stay with you long after you leave the desert.
